i have got an 318is 1993 L reg when i start it first thing in the morning or when the engine is cold. it starts and cuts off and i have to start it again and hold the revs up for few seconds then its alright. and when it idles durin the cold start the rpm is lower then it should be its around 750 rpm. and when the engine is in its normal running condition then the revs are around 1000 rpm. i think it could be a faulty idle control valve or the throttle body butterfly sticks due to carbon build up.
i'm not sure on the problem, but all older cars have that... i wouldn't be worried... do u have remote start??? maybe that would be easier than sitting in the car and starting it on a cold winters' morning...
You could try cleaning the throttle body. I doubt it will help but it might. Sounds just like it's doing what it's supposed to do. Maybe the fuel injectors are clogged?

Sup Andy - - - EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Wat a coincedence. It happend to me today. Its been acting up for a while, like when i start it it would bounce around at rpms a little for like 4 secs, but today was the first time it got low enough and actually cut off. I was about to put up a post today bought it. Um, i got a 93 318i, but i have no idea wat it is. Tell me if you figure anything out. On another note, do you have any other problems with the car?
sorry for the multiple posts, but kevin, if my fuel injectors were clogged how could i fix that easily? Also, i can smell gas sometimes, so i was thinking something was wrong with my fuel injectors or fuel line
Your Idle Control Valve needs cleaning or replaced, cheap to do or nothing if you want to clean it, it gets carbon build up after a while, there is a write-up with pics on www.e36coupe.com under technical (great site) i let mine soak in degreaser or you can use carb cleaner and prob solved!
