Rough Idle/misfire When Warm 325i - BMW Forum

i just took a carwash a couple of days ago and the day after the wash, i started up the car and it wouldnt stay on. and then i got it to stay on but it runs really rough and seems to misfire when i drive it after warm up. like one whole bank is not working, and it seems like the exhaust is clogged up.

i have checked:
the icv and cleaned it
unplugged the maf and put resistance to it to by pass it
i tried putting old chip in my ecu
i tried reading some codes and at first i got replace dme, and then i got a maf code

a little background on the car
92 325i with 130k i have a 93 325is motor in there

any help would be greatly appreciated.

did the ECU seem wet when you replaced the chip? Aounds like that is what happened, but not absolutely sure.

no it didnt seem too wet, nothing too obvious hinting that water got in the ecu that i could see.

did you check the plugs, make sure no water somehow got down into the spark plug tubes. pull the coil off and shine a flash light down there to try and see water. if you have acess to compressed air shoot some down the tubes and see if anything comes out. make sure you don't pull the plug/s if they have any water in the tube. don't wan to hydrolock the engine and bend a rod!!!

what do you mean "dont pull the plug if they have water in the tube"? wouldnt i have to in order to check if water got in there in the first place?

No, once you remove the coil you can see down inside the hole where the plug is. If there is water or oil in there it will have collected on top of the spark plug. You'd probably notice moisture on the end of the coil's rubber boot tho when you removed it. If there was liquid in the hole and you then removed the spark plug all that moisture then goes on down into the head and that wouldn't be good. In all honesty your problem seems to be AFM related.

i checked on bimmerforums. this guy has an OBDII 97.. he says he was cleaning his precat o2 sensor and his HFM(?) and the car is fine when its cold, but when its warm it has rough idle

Like I said earlier it sounds AFM related. IE- MAF, HFM ,whatever you want to call it.. plus if your car is throwing that code then I'd say that is a good place to look at. You can get a used AFM for $60.

jesus dude this is only a forum not a shop if you don't want our help then go to the dealer i'm sure they'd be happy to charge you an hour of diag to tell you whats wrong with your car. there is only so much we can do going off what you say is happening.

well for all you beeotches out there who were very helpful (especially you bryan) you can stop helping out. just kidding, but i found the problem so i will post incase anyone else later has same problem

the problem was mad water go in the 2 plugs closest to firewall. all i did was open it up and dried them out and it started to run fine. idle is still kinda high but that should be much easier to fix
