Replacing Hydraulic Lifters For Vanos??? E36 318i 1994

Hi guys,
Has any experienced this during idle randomly I hear a whistle sound coming from the front passenger side. I was looking on line and they said it's a known issue with E36 and more likely the hydraulic lifters needs to be replaced. Has any one tried replacing theirs? If you did; how many lifters do you need and if it's an easy job to tackle? Thanks so much guys.

You don't get a whistling noise from bad lifters. You are either hearing the air injection pump or you have a vac. leak.

is it only during idle. I had a vac. leak and it only make a ... "NOISE" whatever sound it is I thought it sounded a little like a blowoff valve when I pressed on the throttle. hope that is informative. good luck

Yeah I pretty much notice that whistle sound during idle. It seems that my bimmer whistle on hot chicks on the parking lot. but I don't like the whistling part. So do you think it's something else?

Is the Vac. leak something to do with AC? Also the air injection pump, is it something I can replace easily? I'm hearing the whistle sound after I started driving the car for 10 to 15 minutes. After I turn of the car & let it rest for a couple of hours it disappears then comes back again after I drive it.
