Remote Central Locking

Hi there all,
New here!

So I bought a 1997 318i on a private sale (first mistake!) and it's been nothing but an absolute pain since.
It's needed a lot doing just to keep it going.

Anyway, when I bought it, the guy told me it had remote central locking, just the electric part of the key fob was missing (and gave me the key, which was missing parts!) so to work it, I'd need a new key.

Anyway, a few months has passed and I wasnted to treat myself,
so I ordered a master key. On collection, the lads at the garage couldn't code it,
saying I most likely don't have remote central locking. Ouch my wallet!

I just want to know, how do I check for sure,
and if I don't have it, is there any way I can upgrade it to use the new key fob with remote central locking?

Thanks!

J

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz............how to check if you have central locking...put your key in the trunk lock cylinder & turn to lock & unlock......with central locking the whole vehicle will lock & unlock along with the trunk......it will do the same @ the driver's door lock cylinder.....& on some models there is a central lock button on the right side of the console, it will have a door symbol on it......

johnny,

Probabaly not......I am pretty sure that was not a stock option in 1997, but you can call the dealer & check to be sure......

If it was actually 'born' in 1997 and not just registered.......................

January 1997: Facelift with new grille and launch of new 318is Sedan. The 328i Sedan/Coupe range is replaced by new 328i Executive and Highline in both body styles with extra equipment. The 318i now has remote central locking standard, the 323i gets leather door trim and extra equipment, the 318is Coupe is upgraded with sport seats and body coloured door handles and mirrors. A new 318is sedan sourced from South Africa is launched with the 318is Coupe's M44 engine and equipment.

@johnny

Dealer had no info unfortunately, I asked when I bought the key
Ya, seemed strange to me too!

@ marti

not sure to be honest,
it has painted bumpers and skirts,
but has the squarer kidneys.

Any other way to tell the facelift?

Also, any other way to tell if it has remote central locking? Is there a relay or something to control the remote central locking I can search for?

A remote system can be installed, but it may be a challenge to have operate from the current key fob.
