My 96 328i with ~85K on the odo has a rumble or growling noise like I'm running snow tires in the rear. Noise noticed in the last few weeks and definitely getting more noticeable.
Hard to say exactly what is producing the noise. I just know that no noise is a good noise coming from that area of the car.
I'd strongly recommend your Bimmer be taken to the "doctor" and the only driving you should do is to the clinic. That is until you have to noise problem sorted out.
I had that same exact problem on my '96 318i. The back wheel bearing needed replacing, the entire wheel was able to be shook before it was replaced. That same growling noise I couldn't figure out either until I took it to my BMW mechanic. Hope this helps.
Mike
