You said they "welded part of the exhaust system. i had a crack in my downpipe"
Do you know if they had to remove the exhaust manifold to weld it?
I have a crack on my 318i's downpipe too.
Was quoted 500 to remove, weld the crack, then reinstall.
I was wondering if it would not be easier for a skilled welder to weld while the downpipe is still on the car?
Did you go to a muffler shop, did they weld without removing?
I think the place I went to just wants to rip me off too.
They said they would need the car all day.
I still think it is a 30 min job at most, to weld the small crack shut.
Thanks
Brakes are one of the easier tasks you can do yourself. Even replacing the rotors. Get yourself a manual and start doing many of the tasks yourself. Get to know your car, save some $$$$$ and spend it on fun things!
Hey Brian do you know if the garage had to remove the downpipe in order to weld the crack shut?
I have a 318i too and am am wondering if it can be done on the car, would save a lot of labour to remove and replace.
Thanks
Rob

As for the downpipe, I believe they removed it, but not sure about the whole exhaust system. I went to a BMW Mechanic place. $500 is way too steep. It costed me $80. Ask different BMW mechanics around your area. I am sure someone else should be able to help you a little more.
I do not know anything about welding, but I don't think that welding it while its still on the car would be a good thing, but who knows.
By the way, once you get it welded, your car with run a lot smoother and you will get a lot of power back.
Does anyone know why my downpipe would crack? Just old age or what? Is this common?
Well being that your car is old, the downpipes have been heated up and cooled down a couple bajillion times. this casues contraction and expansion of the metal, making it more likely to crack This could do it or it was a little rusty.

oh yeah, damn it, i swear that i am not retarded..
500$ is way to much to get ir rewelded around here i know a few peple that could do it for way less then half of that! and as for brakes do it yourself and oil change you could have saved about 300 out of 482$!! theres some good parts for your bimmer! but hey sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!
yeah, try to find someone who will do it for under $100, for the welding of the down pipe, but don't go to some crap place either. If I got the downpipe welded, oil change, 2 new rotors, and 2 new break pads for that same price, then there is something way off.
as for doing break changes, i want to start doing that. i will need some help even with that diy page though.
brake changes are really straight fwd. you might have to take the rotors to a shop to get trued though. My friend vince just dropped the tranny and did the clutch on his '93 325is himself.....took him a month and a half but he did it himself.
$480 for all that work?
New Front Rotors, New Pads, Oil Change, welded part of your exhaust, taxes included?
You should thank them and pass the name of that place around!
I got my front brake pads replaced once on my 318i, bill came to $280 Canadian taxes in! That was at a small garage not even the stealership.
Didn't even machine my old rotors for that, took them all of 30 mins!
That was a rape, needless to say I never went back.
My quote on just the exhaust downpipe weld was $500 plus taxes, and that was at a discount muffler shop.
Don't feel so bad, you got a great deal.

Hope you got some kickass brake pads for that price. You obviously got ripped off big time.
The price is usually $80CDN, $100 at most for pads and labour. However, I do it myself and it's easy. You don't need to have your rotors machined or turned down if they aren't warped. It's actually not too great for your rotors.
Where in the world are you bringing your car? To have my entire exhaust installed and welded in with custom hangers only costs me $50CDN.
If you know you're getting ripped off, why would you even pay that price? Where in Canada are you located? If you're in Ontario I'll hook you up with some good shops and parts stores.
