The backlighting is out on my stock '96 318i radio, rendering the display useless. The local dealer says that their fix is a new radio. A 17 cent bulb or LED and they're replacing the whole radio? Is that like trading in the car because the gas tank is low?

get a new HU... easier and well more features and sounds better... unless you feel like tracking down the blub and proper tool to remove the HU and dismantel your deck and start soldering on it...
I've got a Alpine 3 BMW HU from a '94 if you want to buy it.. No code but BMW could get that for ya if you called or asked them for it...
