i've got a 97' 328i sport coupe and a mate has got a 2001 golf v6 4motion (4wd 2.8 v6 204 bhp) they are both standard cars and he's always trying to race me, but not had a proper chance to yet.. would i stand any chance against him do you think?

evens if you ask me
probably would depend on who drives best as their both about equal performance wise
For a 2.8 V6 in such a small car, the golf is actualy quite... slow, well slower than it should be, must be the weight of the engine.

- True
I haw a 325i and my friend has a Golf VR6 and there are almost no difference between our driving skills. I had smoked him few times as he did that to me too.
I think you haw big chance to win if you dive god.
Yep, it's going to all be in teh launch and shifting like most races are. He's going to have an easier time launching, but if you can put down the power, with out wheel spin, or just enough if you know how much is just enough and you don't miss a shift and know where to shift for your car.... it'll be close if he's good also. But I would venture to say that if you lose, then it would be because of driver skill, not car performance.
stuck in a 2 litre vauxhall cavalier at the moment due to new house and marriage, but when the pay rise comes the bavarian beast sits back on my driveway :P
I agree with previous - pretty similar. The golf, from the awd would have some get-up soon after launch, but I'm wondering how long that lasts... not sure about the power band in the vw, but if it's "like every other car" your bimmer's torque band should be powering you long after he's done in his.
But, I am new to cars, so I could be wrong.
shouldn't lose unless he tries to stop at say 60 mph and say oh i'm done racing. He would rpobably get the jump but at about those speeds mention you should be, or start passing him.

and btw, justin318is's car would def. be the winner
