Try this...

Go to BMW VIN Decoder and enter the last 7 digits of the vehicle's VIN number off the registration. It will tell you the engine that should've been in the car and a few other things. Far as I know all the 318's had 4 cylinder motors in them, either M42, M43, M44. Let us know what you find out.

Hi there. well it was supposed to be a 1799cc M44 4 cylinder. but the mechanic said it was at least a 2.0 6 cylinder. he also said he was unsure if it was a 2.0 or a 2.3. is there a VIN number on th actual engine i could use to find out what it is cause the 1 that is in the dash is the original 1 and only tells me its suposed to be a 1.8. i am so confused about this. do u think a BMW dealership would know which engine it is cause really he needs to know for repairs and stuff.

take pics of the engine and post them up. if its a six it should fill the entire hood space not including fan shroud. this is what a 318 motor looks like with shroud removed aka half of available space filled

contrast - see how the sixes come up all the way to the front unlike the fours? the intake mani is totally different too. with these two pics you should be able to tell which one it is.
