I have been having to put oil in my car every 2 weeks due to it losing some.
I have noticed a few oil spots in my garage and in the mornings when I drive to work and get off of the highway I smell the burnt oil coming through the vents when the Heater is on. It only happens I guess when the car warms up pretty good or its just doing it and im not noticing it at other times.
When I got my car inspected today and the guy had to rev the motor up I saw the burning smoke coming from the passenger side of the car towards the rear/side of the engine , I took a look at it and it seems it is coming from the valve cover so im guessing I need a new valve cover gasket.
Does anyone know how hard of a job this is ?
It doesnt look to hard but im curious what im going to get myself into?
How long should it take would you say and how much is one of these gaskets ?

Just curious Thanks David
I did mine about a year ago and it took me about 45 min to 1 hour. you can get a valve cover gasket kit for less than $30 i think. look at bavauto.com or bmpdesign.com

Make sure you get new rubber tension grommets for the nuts that hold the VC on otherwise the new gasket will leak. I think it takes 16 grommets on the 6cyl BMW's, I know it takes 22 on the V8's. Also make sure you clean all of the oil out of the spark plug holes really well other wise you can short out a coil and if it is shorted long enough it can kill your DME.
rubber Tension grommets do yall mean the rubber grommets that are in Figure 17 ? The one's that help hold down the Valve cover ? And if so what do I ask for at the dealership parts counter ? The Rubber tension Grommets used to hold down the valve cover ?????
Inspect the valve cover when it comes off. In particular, be careful with the baffle and seal on the inside (Figure 16). This seal does not appear to be available as a separate part (it comes with the valve cover). The good news is that it doesn't really do much - it just seals an air baffle to the valve cover. Also, when you remove the valve cover, make sure that you don't loose any of the rubber grommets (Figure 17), or flat washers that hold them in.
