The e's had a different head I think, they were made to be torquey and economical. Not sure if it means economical though, could be.

ya it means that. like the 325e (e30) was actually a 2.7l not 2.5l like the 325i or 325is

the 'e' means ETA which is the greek letter for efficiency.

i think only the 85 325e had the 2.7l, the rest were 2.5s

yes, it had a 81mm crankshaft vs the 325i's 75mm, but there are many other differences between the two
