program remote key with trunk locked???

just bought 1997 328i, car did not come with the fully functional key. went to dealership paid $175 for new key, and now they say that they cannot program the key because the trunk is locked!!! Does anyone have any ideas about how to get into the trunk (or get the key programmed)? (One mechanic said to drill a hole under the license plate and then try to get to release latch)

someone else said to go through the back seat, but didn't say how to do that

I see no reason why the dealership can't complete the key programming.

If your going through the trunk you remove the rear seat. You will see a removable plate or steel in the middle of the seat back support(covered by insulation). You will have to beat the steel plate out and will not be able to put it back, but whats the big deal right? at least you can get in the trunk and use the manual trunk release(its a small ring clearly marked "trunk release"). At least thats how my car is........hope this helps.
