I was wondering what type of power steering fluid my car (94 325i auto transmission) would use. It is getting a little low and I wanted to make sure what type it was because I bought some stuff called stop - a leak and it says works with most power steering fluids. I looked in owners manual and didn't find it.

Thanks for any help

Gentlemen: Wait a minute!!! Before going to the auto part store take a look at the filler cap on your power steering reservoir; what you read on it is what you buy....not all BMWs were created equal some drink up ATF (auto. Trans. Fluid) my 5 series is like that but others like the power steering fluid like DOT 4 low viscosity fluid....as such messing up on this one will cost you a power steering pump....if no info then on the cap then:
A. call your local dealer with your serial number he'll tell you what type of fluid you need.
B. Take a peak at your existing fluid is it red? honey-colored like? or what?

May be the 3 series is different from the 5ers?

Yeah...if its anything a BMW driver MUST get from dealer-only stock it's coolant and powersteering fluids these are very dealer specific for each BMW model and putting aftermarket fluids in there will not only mess up your manifold and hoses...

Although I like to buy dealer's fluids for mycar remember ATF is ATF anywhere dealer or not; for the power steering fluid (proper) BMW approves the DOT 4 low viscosity on many models.

The main point above is not to add/mix ATF to DOT fluid or vise versa too/two different animals with different chemical properties!!!!

There you have it...buy a bottle of ATF from anywhere you like. While at it get the old ATF out of the reservior if you can (I use a kitchen tool) "turkey baster" to empty the reservior and fill it up with fresh fluids while engine off!!!

See my $1.99 BMW special tool below....LOL
