hi im currently looking at buying a 1996 p reg 316i compact, ive never owned a bmw b4 and i have as yet only seen pictures of it but 2morro i am going to look at it and to be honest i dont have a clue what to look out for! its got 110000 miles on it and i hear bmws last a lot longer than that is that correct? it looks good in the pics but u cant really trust the guy thats selling u the car can u ( i no that from experience) ne help at all would b much apreciated guys x

I would not suggest buying a 316 if u want it to last long.

If U want a 4-cyl car get a 318is with an M44 Engine. ==> 1.9 Liters

Or get the 6-cyl 325 (2.5 Liters) or even the 328 (2.8 Liters).

Since I'm stateside I don't know much about the 316i... but you just need to look over all of the high wear parts, find out if the inspection II was done, check out the rear strut mounts... there's lots of threads about what to look out for all E36s...

Get ready for unexpected. I would recommend having the seller to do certify/safety & e-test for you if it's still required before buying the car. So all you need to do is register. Don't try to do a as-is transaction. Not unless you're a car mechanic & knows about cars very well. I just thought of passing my experience to you. I save tons of money since my mechanic is a close friend of mine when I did my safety/certify.

In the UK, this would be the equivalent of an RAC inspection. (I guessed you're from the UK because you said "p reg")
