Can bad gas cause the car to smoke... i ran into a problem yesterday and my check engine light came on... i plugged up my peake tool and it came back saying:
A friend told me that gettin gas and having water in the tank might have something to do wit the car smoking and causing the check engine light... i used delta gas station to full her up... my friend told me to drive her until she gets empty, add a bottle of injector fluid, fill her up at a exxon or mobil and drive her for awhile on the highway so all the fumes and the 02 sensor to get cleaned (whatever that mean)... does anyone agree...
duce,
There are alot of variables here.
1. Why would there of been water in the tank, or did you mean water in the tank at the gas station?
2. What color is the smoke? white, black, or grey
3. If the O2 sensor just went bad it can cause you to run rich, and throw a code.
4. Have you contacted the gas station and filed a complaint about the gas? Depending if the owner is honest, you may be able to have them pay for any repairs if the gas is determined to be the cause of something going wrong. Only applies if #1 is the gas station.
The O2 sensor will not be reset by just driving the car on the highway. It may burn carbon and buildup off, but it will stll have to be reset.
If you drive your car to operating temps (at least 20 minutes) each time you go anywhere, I would guess the O2 sensor went bad. Replace and enjoy.
As I re-read your post you may want to check and make sure none of the wires for the O2 sensor are burnt or close to a heat source, as that could cause the voltage drop.
Hope this helps
i meant to say that i probably got water in the tank from pumping gas but i have pumped from there before... i just bought the car about 3 weeks ago and this just happened on sunday... i went to get a flat tire repaired... as i was goin up the driveway, i thought i heard something like rub against the concerte for like 2 secs... then i put the car on the lift, i forgot to turn the car off and after they took of the tire, after 4 mins or so, black smoke just started to come up... i turned off the car, got the tire mounted and pulled out... while i was pullin out, there wasn't any smoke coming out... i drove all the way home and no smoke... i even went out to eat right after and no smoke... tried clearing the codes but after i turn off the car and turn it back on, it pops up again...
which o2 sensor's should i get... i called bmw and there about 200 and some change... i know i got 4 sensors so comin up wit 800 is not in my best interest right now, lol... any suggestions...
