I have a 93 325is- the clicking sound turned out to be detonation, If you have a cone Filter, it may be sucking in too much hot fan wash from the engine bay-
I cured my car of this by getting a CAI (the kind that goes down behind your headlamp and behind the front air dam), also my cat was plugged up which was making the engine run hot-
I was told the Air was too hot so it was thin and I was not getting a good combustion which caused the valves to "tick" but that was only when i was bogging it down a bit or going up hill in a low gear- also happened just when I was at a stop on flat ground. that was My cars solution, i hope it helps a bit
