sooo i was wondering what you guys think i should do first getting some power or upgrading the sound system? i know i can change the exterior look of the car after i have done atleast one of these things first... thanks
I'd say do both performance: CAI or M3 stock exhaust if you dont have a disk changer get one or maybe some components but depending on your price range the way i think is a nice sounding car definitly out weights a good sounding stereo
Performance is awesome...I would definitely want to go for that. However, I also love a great sound system and I know BMWs aren't known for that. It comes down to what you prefer. Maybe you could split the difference...throw in a new head unit (Alpine or Nakamici are well known for BMWs) because the stock BMW ones are crap, then chuck in some new component speakers and you'll be sounding good inside for maybe a total of $500. Whatever is left you can throw into the engine: Chip, exhaust, CIA...but thats when it can get really expensive...
I'd go for performance if you can deal with the stock sound system as it is for now...

Pioneer 400w amp for $20 at a yard sale (to replace my fried MRV-1507)
Infinity Kappa 4" 2-way speakers(rear)
Infinity Kappa 5.25" component speakers(front)
Debaffled airbox, K&N filter
Tracked Mud on carpets
Shampooed and cleaned carpets
I did both and couldn't be happier. However, i did go the audio route first. My car being my daily driver I wanted to have an exceptional sound system for my drive. And being in traffic for most of my drive i didn't see it necessary to modify the performace. After the sound system I couldn't help but falling in love with working on my car. So I did many performance mods also. Now i take different routes to work just to push my car more.
It depends on what you like and why you're doing it. If you're doing it bc you want a better ride go performance. To empress chicks go sound system and asthetics. Most girls that you tell the different mods you done under the hood will just give you a funny look. But if pimp out the way your car looks then get a sound system to blow her panties off i think that's a good route too.

Go for performance first! A normal audio system is not expensive and you can even listen your favourite music. Performance and looks are more important IMO

The 2 things that i regret about doing the sound first was I dynamated my entire car to stop the rattles and increase SPL. This added a significant amount of weight to my car ~50 lbs. In retrospect i would have just done the trunk and doors. The second thing is the size of my subs. I love the sound and how much bass i can push, but the box weighs A LOT. I would guess around another 50 - 60 lbs. Good think about that is I can take it out whenever i want.
