I am a newb to this site and to owning BMW's...so please bear with me!
I have recently bought a '94 3181s Coupe...the 16v DOHC version...I was surprised by how quick this car is and was wondering....
Seeing as the car seems to "boost" at 2500 rpm and then again at 5000 rpm I was wondering if the previous owner had "chipped" it...also, it doesnt red-line until the needle is practically off the clock!
Without taking the car apart I wanted to know if any other forumites experience this "boosting" with their chips in place?
I'm kind of hoping that it hasnt been chipped so that I can make it go even quicker!
Also, has anyone seen the guy advertsising his copy chips on ebay...$25 for a schnitzer copy and they are meant to work...anyone bought one???
Lastly, I have bought a set of M3 17' alloys and these have set the car off beautifully...but i want to add a sopiler and was wondering whether these can be "glued" in place or whether the boot lid has to be drilled (which I would prefer not to attempt!)...
Thanks for all your help in making my car quicker and sexier!
I don't have 318, I have a 328....and that boost you feel is just the nature of the engine. BMW makes great engines with a lot of torque compared to other cars. Don't go cheap on anything....like a $25 chip, I mean c'mon, who are they trying to fool. You should go to a respected company like Dinan or Conforti for chip type stuff. Since you are running a 4cyl vs a 6cyl, it would be bad ass if you were to save up a little cash and have your engine blown (turbo). As for the spoiler issue, I'm not too sure, probably not glued though. It should come with instructions.
Glue can only hold so much...when you really get going fast, a functional spoiler is supposed to keep your car pinned on the road by exerting downforce to counteract the lift from the air going under the car. At 100+ mph, thats a lot of force on that wing...given these laws of physics, you would want to bolt your wing down...it only makes sense

That's what I thought...I was doing 130+ on the M1 yesterday and I am sure that at that speed two things are gonna happen...
1. Watch my spoiler fly off down the road
2. Get nicked
But, I saw a post on here about gluing on the spoiler with tape you can get from BMW parts...just thought I'd ask the question...seems a little risky though with that much force exerted on the part!
Anyone know where maximumperf from Ebay has disappeared to...i want to buy one of his copied chips...ta J
like mentioned before, he probably disappeared because his chips might be crap...Dinan and AC chips have that price for a reason...how can a cheap chip be the same thing?

I hear what you are saying, but if you go to the link and check out the feedback this guy got you will see 17 negative responses out of a 1000 sales!
My techie mate from Microsoft was telling me that a copied chip is very much like a copied cd...they work perfectly but dont have the flashy box!
I'm guessing that Schintzer etc charge that much because people will pay well to make their cars faster and because of set up/r&d costs...once these companies find out that they are being ripped off by copies at a fraction of the price they will reduce their charges...just like cd's, dvd's etc etc...back-engineering costs a fraction of the start up costs associated with the development of any new product.
I fancy this guy has his head down at the moment because of copyright infringements...I hope he pops up again because for $25 I will stick one in the car and see how it runs!
Thats a damn good argument right there...Its a bitch that my 318i has an ODB-II comp meaning I can't chip it. You are lucky in that sense. You have an ODB-I which were used through 95. Are all of the positive feedbacks for chips or does he sell other goodies too?

first off i drive a 94 318is so i can relate to u a lot, that boost you feel is normal engine, and is kind of nice because our engines are so slow at low end, well they are slow all the weay through but hey! as for a spoiler if you get a m3 one which is the only one that looks good, there are places for you to drill holes take off your trunk mat! also the chip i know people up here have bought them and they have worked so what can you lose? it wont blow or fry your engine like a lot of people on here says it will! check his feedback for the same item too! do your reaseac h and you should be fine!
David
For the 318, the Dinan chip is the way to go. I have one and it was at least 50% better than I expected. Very significant gains you can really feel. You'll wonder why you never bought one sooner.
Don't glue or tape the wing onto your trunk lid. If you bought a spoiler glue or tape would be fine, but not on a functional wing.

don't bother drilling holes. just use a bunch of APC stickers to tape it down. Note: this trick only works on giant wings! To get the full effect of this method, you must get a neon underglow kit, a towing hitch, stylish APC windshield banner, and an exhaust tip you can fit your head in.
