Sorry brain lapse, meant to say the ECU, under the hood at the rear either left or right side big black box in there will be your ECU ( the brain ) thats where they normally chip them unless it can be done via the OBD socket, all depends on the age of the car, they dont normally remove the chip, they just remap it via computer, had mine done, they took the ECU out wired it up to a comp and communicated with somewhere in london, it took most of the day.

I was advised that this chip has been speciffically tailored to my car, that by me removing it to place in another car, 95 318, would not work because they have to have the computer talk to the car.
Thanks for the insight anyways, it seems that I will only be trying to hold on to suspension system, (Dinan), and exhaust system, (other/unknown). they were the only mods done other than upkeep/restoration and or repairs.
They are correct as , I said they dont actually remove the chip, the word re-chip means via computer unless you car is very very old then they do put a new chip in, which is a very risky job.

I actually have the stock BMW chip in a carry case. The DINAN chip in installed and then hooked up to a computer and then tuned.
What I was hoping for was that I can take the chip out and re-insert to another car, but alas that is not possible.
But as this is all playing out, the possible write off of my car, it seems as though I may have an opportunity to repair at a much lower cost. After consulting my brother and another friend of mine, the situation may not look so bleak. I may have my X-mas after all!!! We'll see, please wish me luck, I don't want to buy another car under these circumstances, plus I was just getting to know my car.
