If I buy a performance chip of a web site like bavatuo.com or one of those sites does it come ready to be installed? Is there anything special that needs to be done or is it fairly easy to install?
i believe theres FAQ's on how to install it in the FAQ/DIY forum, basically yes its ready to install its just a chip you remove the current one and replace the new one.
I dont know the specific effects on emmisions and fuel economy, but many have claimed to gain 3-4 mpg on their cars. My mpg never changed. I have a TMS chip for my e34.

Anyone have any good suggestions for a chip for a 98 318ti?
They dont make chips for your car. Anything 1996+ started using a different system called OBDII. The only similar thing you could do is get a shark injector, which really only raises your rev limit without touching your power. Still a very good upgrade!

the shark software remaps fuel curves and such just like a chip- only OBDII systems dont take to the mods as well as OBDI. IT is a very good upgrade for the money

Makes it harder to pass emissions, how much harder I don't know.
Makes your fuel economy worse. Think about it, your fuel/air rations are being altered to give you MORE power. That's the point of a chip, more power. How do you get more power? More gas and air in each combustion. Why would you get better mileage if you're getting more power?
Thats what I always believe Deloriant, btu I still dont know how people could post saying they got better gas mileage. Although, my mileage seems UNCHANGED.
I get between 18-19 city and 21-22 highway. I always keep track wiht my OBC. The e34 is supposed to get 18/21.

Generally, you are making your engine more efficient - more power, same displacement. The torque band on a Dyno pull is the measure of your engines efficiency. Chips make more torque!
I imagine city driving mileage drops for most, as the urge to use the new found power overwhelms us. Highway driving at the same speed would improve.
Most chip manufacturer's claim better emissions and fuel economy..reason being you must use 91 or better octane and like mentioned above the managment is more efficient. Chips also adjust timing so there is more to it than just air/fuel ratios. I also didnt notice and increase or decrease, but after the chip I get on it alot more than i used to, so in that aspect it actually did improve.
