Overheating!!!

Hi i have a 320i e36 bmw, never had a problem till the other day the temp gauage shot up and went striaght into red so i pulled over and let it cool down, happend again on the way home with it chucking all the coolent out, no sure of problem and checked for water in the oil which was no sign, car runs fine just overheats, does any one have any good info to carry checks out to find the problem? am thinking it the head gasket, does any have a manual or info on th timming marks to carry out a head gasket replacement?cheers

Does it happen while driving slowly or stopped (a bad fan maybe)?

Sounds like your thermostat is stuck closed........
