hey man, tell me how it works out. Also, what kind of filter does your intake use? is it K&N or something diffrent, If it's something diffrent PLEASE PLEASE tell me what it is, and where I might procure some of those filters.
Torque0 and I are trying to build our own intake for the 525i, and we cant find a viable alternative filter.

Those green ones are pretty good I guess (I forget what they're called). I gave into the name brand of K&N though. Make a PVC pipe intake! Get one of the universal cone filters.

The PVC I used was pretty thick, I wouldn't see any need for further insulation.
Here is the link for thos filters, um go figure they're just as much as K&N. I know my local Checker Auto parts place has some cone ones in the "ricer" section that are like 20 bucks.

i was thinking about getting an intake for my 95 318 just for fun, plus my car is stock. will this fit my car, and how much was this aa intake?
is getting an intake worth the money? will it have any slight noticalbe change to my car? are there any negative things that could have effect on my car over time?
impact on HP is roughly 15, but variant on temperature and speed (in theory, the car moving would suck in colder air than car that is stationary on a dyno). Regardless, you will notice a difference.
Negative effects: K&N filters must be kept oiled. Over time, the oil dries up and they need to be reoiled. It's not hard, but if neglected its filtering abilities are reduced and you run the risk of using unclean air.
I'm not sure, the AA is around 300.

Just so you know when heated pvc puts off toxic gases. So if you do decide on the pvc you may not want to breathe around your car till its cooled down.

Really? Is there a filter out there that can do better? I have yet to hear about one, but maybe there is. 90% is quite awesome and I can't complain. There is a reason that K&N filters always come with a quality CAI or other intake setup.
