this is the diagnosis from the mechanic...is this a common problem on 318's with 120K miles that have been well maintained?
Am getting suspiscious about this mechanic and reckon he may be causing more trouble than he is fixing.

You mean the piston? Also the cylinder surface is damaged I guess, so look at the junk yard for a new engine. Upgrade 318i --to--> 328????? :P

you can always pay HELLA to have a mechanic repair your current engine, or pay about the same amount and upgrade to 2.5L or 2.8L engine_ of corse that calls for some rewiring who doesnt love that

No compression to one cylinder means a mechanical problem. The cylinder block is milled in one piece and if the surface is damaged the only way to repair this is taking out the engine.

What kind of advice is your mechanic you given?

so the official word from the mechanic is a piece of metal was found rattling around the engine. 2 valves gone. he suggests it may have been sucked in through the manifold?

this guy worked on the car 3 days ago to replace a couple of belts and is now wanting $1550 to fix this problem.

am i lucky here or being taking for a ride?

If you're paying that much for a rebuild, might as well find another used 318 motor. It's only $1000-$1500 for a low milage one.

replacing the 1.8 litre with the 2.5 litre would require new springs and maybe even brakes...
along with some more crap

Exhaust, shocks and struts, springs, custom repositioned engine mounts plus everything mentioned above. You know for the price of a 6 cyl motor swap into a 318 you could practically buy a used 325.

Yup. Buying a bigger engine sounds good and all but suspension will definately be needed to support the weight along with handling since u got more weight up there that wasnt there before. Lots of hidden costs there

Dude 1500 for a couple of valves. There is no way that the "metal piece" damaged the piston so for some head work and maybe some machining...1500 is too much. I got my entire head rebuilt for only 2500 with machining. He is pulling your leg. Dont let him get away with it. Have a look for yourself. And about a larger engine, have fun with that. It isnt as easy as these guys are saying!!!Good luck!

Go for a new engine, a good used one. I think the cylinder surface and piston are damaged too. It's more than only renew the 2 valves I guess.
