so i went to some air show, at a beach a couple miles away from my house today, in which i have to take a parkway!
anyways, to make a long story short.. iw as crusing at 65.. and tried to set the cuise control... and acceled to 70, and it kept on increaseing speed, i tried turning it off... i tried hitting the break and nothing worked...
i keeped on accelerating to speeds up to 100 mph.. after trying to slow the car down, and absolutly killing my brakes.. i turned the igniton off and came to a stop on the shoulder of the road...
tried turning the car back on, and the car shot to rev limiter... turned the car off again, popped the hood, and took off the cruise control disconnected the battery, waited 15 mins, put everything back on and turned on the car.. after i did all this, the car started fine, and i was able to make it home another 5 miles...
anyways, it was scary and i have no idea whats wrong with it.. i am now afraid to use cruise control again, to see if it'll happen again...
try it again, but on a deserterd road with a friend in another car behind you. This time do it at a lower speed to see if it happens again. Since you know how to fix it (turn ignition off) you shouldn't have a problem if it happends. Then take it to a shop if it does happen. That is a serious problem that could turn out really bad.
Personallly, I would take it in whether it does it again or not becuase you don't really want to risk problems like that.
OR, you could just get an 02 with carbs and not have to worry about cruise control or electrical prolems :P

WRITE A LETTER TO BMW!!!
The failure your are describing is not like a window regulator or odo pixel failure; it a serious saftey hazard. I can only imagine what an attorney could do with BMW if an accident was caused by a failure of their cruise control.
Write a letter or make some calls- it may be covered under a hidden warranty.
(I speak from experience on my 88 944- 12 years after production I got the manifold replaced under a "hidden" warranty) A letter can't hurt

Talk with the stealership about this deffect. They MIGHT offer to replace it free. I doubt it. If the price looks pretty hefty then try a local shop. If you really want to get serious and get it fixed free write a letter to coorporate and play the phone tag game with BMW for a month or two.

Sounds like fun.. jk.. glad your safe... Let me tell u a little story! about a year and a half ago or sometin, some dude bought a new camper van i think it was, and it had cruise control. He went for a drive, put the cruise control on, went to the back and made himself a coffee, and wht happened?? he got 1mill richer (not sure exactly but something stupid like that). Obviously he, well the camper van, crashed, and he suied the company coz nowhere in the manual/instructions did it say that the car wont drive itself when in cruise control. Not a bad plan for making money though. So im sure if u think long and hard you'll come out better than u went in!
This happened in the US, nd here in new zealand it was in the news so im sure some1 else must know about it!
That might actually work... its good to have a short fix... but over all... this problem needs to be fixed by the producer... only cause its dangerous for you and me...

yea, this is absolutely true. It was a winnebago (spelling?) and if you look in their manual now it states that cruise control is not an auto-pilot.. what a moron, tho.. wouldnt you at least test to make sure the RV was making turns and stuff IF you thought it was an auto pilot? He deserved to be shot rather than paid a million dollars..
But glad is all ok and this was a recall item. At least on my 93 they did something to the cruise control cable for free.. take her in and let us know what they say. I have heard other BMW horror stories with this and actually getting into some serious accidents.
