oild change coming up - what kind of oil?

i recently bought a 1998 328ic. Runs hella good and has 100k miles and i'm very very impressed! I use to think hondas ran good even after 100k miles but oh man, this bmw runs so smooth!

So, what's the BEST oil i can use on this car? I want this car to run like this for many more years...
I use to do oil changes on my old rx7 use to put castrol gtx.
Would you recommend me doing oil changes on this car? What brand oil. It's about 60'F around here now. How about synthetic? Do I need to do it every 3000 miles? My brother has a new 330 and i think he does oil changes every 8000 miles...

Yes you should definitely change to synthetic. I recomend Mobile 1 5W 30. if this is the first time using synthetic you should change it again after about 1,000 miles, just to flush out all remaining mixes of oil. But after this you can run about 8,000 miles between each change. But if you use regular oil, you should change every 3,000 miles. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

thanks One more quick question.... How come on these newer cars you don't have to do oil changes every 3000 miles? Do the engines run cleaner or what?

with regular oil or synthetic? With regular, I thought an oil change was still recomended every 3k. But with synthetic, i don't know a whole lot about it, someone else will, but the way it's made causes much less engine wear, it's not so much the engines. But i don't know a whole lot about newer cars. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It depends the driving conditions where you live, as well as how you drive your car...

For example...I changed mine a month and a half ago...middle of the summer in RI -- 85 Degrees easy, sitting in Beach traffic or pushin hard on the highway...I put in 15w 50 so it doesn't pour out like pepsi when I change it again...for this "cooler weather" change coming up...10W 30 will probably do...
