Oil Service Reset Not Working!! - BMW Forum

1998 318i

Changed my oil and used the short pin 7 to pin 19 trick for 4 seconds to reset the service oil light with the key on but not running and it doesn't work.

No reset. Any insight to this would help. I have found a couple of places on here that say it works for all E36.

i had that problem too, i just used a longer wire and grounded it the strut bolt. I held it longer,

how much longer??? supposedly longer will reset the service I/II interval also??

I never got it to work on my E36 so I stopped trying. I keep track of oil service intervals on my own.

The service tool may have an internal timer for that. What a tool! (lol) < sorry, i had to...

I got it. Did like olds72 said. grounded pin 7 direct to strut tower bolt and held it for around 7 sec and bingo.....reset.

OK folks, just did the oil change and tried to reset the light and am having trouble. Have the BMW reset tool but dont get any indicator light when i connect it and it will not reset the light. One thing though, the dash indicator is on the last green segment. Does it have to be in the yellow to reset? i tried the wire to ground with pin 7 also but no luck, Any ideas?

The yellow doesn't need to be on. Most likely, you need to know what the key switch needs to be to do it (eg. key on, engine not running).

Tried every conceivable combinaton and the reset tool indicator light never lit up. I checked power and ground to the connector and get 2 with 12v and 1 with ground and one with neither. I tried it with key KOEO and key off with no luck. Do these systems ever quit working?

I have not heard that. But that doesn't rule it out.

I'll try again for anyone else who might have had this issue. I have the AST blue two piece reset tool with a yellow and a green LED and two push buttons, one for oil and one for codes. When i connect it nothing lights up and when i depress the oil reset button nothing happens either. WTF?

I would say its the tool that is at fault.

Do the jumper wire method if that dont work then you at least know you dont have a faulty tool. Hey by the way where can I pickup one of those diagnostic tools and how much do they cost?
