No you dont not need synthetic oil.. unless you have a brand new car.. which comes with it... you may pick synthetic.. but you should use what is in there and keep with it... thats always a good idea... but all E36s came from the factory with non-synthetic oil.
As for how much I pay.. I dont know.. 40 for the oil... (good oil.. ) Cheap oil.. maybe 20ish... filter.. 4-5 dollars.. and thats about it...
Now if you were to get it done at one of those oil change places.. it would be more like... maybe 30-40 buxs...
24.00 for oil and filter at a local shop.
Last BMW specific shop was about 60-80.00

Thanks alot !!! ok and with the non synthetic oil, you just re-set the car and it will tell u next time u need a change right ??
I use full synthetic and I change mine every 5000 miles regardless of the bars...the speed at which they decrease in my car seems to depend on what weight oil I use
If you are wondering about a synthetic oil in a higher milage car.. I say you do a little research... there are some good points to it.. and there are some bad points.. all depends on the shape of the car in my opinion... search a little.. and you will find.. there are many past topics about this such thing.
Oil comes out to be about $30, filter $9. Do it myself. Done at a lube place cost me $50 and I had to provide the filter, which cost me $15 in Autozone.

Im 1000 miles into my oil change using castrol synthetic blend and havent lost any oil at all. Car has 130K mi. So I would suggest trying the blend first if anything.. You guys think I can switch to full synthetic next time?
Just go the 3000 miles and keep on eye on the oil level til then. If there is no unusual oil usage, I don't see why not switch to full synthetic.
Full synthetic is sometimes not recommended on high mileage cars, but after all, we're talking BMW's here. And if your BMW has had the oil changed religiously over the years, that coupled with the fact that it is a BMW, you should be alright.
I pay about $4 for 1 qt. of synthetic oil here, $5 for the filter and I do the oil change myself. BMW's are one of the easiest cars to change the oil on because the filter is right by the radiator. Compared to my old honda where the oil filter is on the back of the block, the beamer is cake.

Yea, I will see what happens from this point until the 3K mark and then make my decison accordingly. Thanks for the input..
changing the oil is easy, but what to do with the used oil after? What does everyone do with the used oil? As of now I am storing it in a 5 gallon bucket and will soon have to deal with it..

Your town might have a program where you put it out with your recycling... or they may have a drop-off point. You could also check with any local oil change places and see if they'll take your used oil. They might charge you for it, though.
