So I was riding along in third gear, and I went to pull for 4th and missed. It went down to second and I had already let off the clutch so it was too late. The tach needle spun all the way around back to 0.
Someone give me a technical explanation of what happened. When I try to crank it now, it sounds like an engine thats not getting any fuel. It hits, but it doesn't crank.
How many miiiillions of dollars is this going to cost me?
what you did was overrev your engine, your engine is only able to spin at a certain RPM untill its physically not able to keep itself intact, a rebuild is pretty expensive
im moving this to the proper section for you.. sorry for such a dumbed down explaination.
Im not to sure but could the engine management system "restricted" the car...i.e. to further avoid damage to the engine...almost like windows going into safe mode...maybe the sytstem just need reset...not to sure TBH
I was watching a program and a driver took a new jaguar around a track and he ripped it too much and the engine management system cut power...all he did was reset it and it was ok...i would just get it checked out by a mechanic

if the starter ingages but doesn't turn over your engines siezed and the safe mode is impossible even if the engine turned off because it would still be in gera causing the engine to spin at xx rpms which caused itself to sieze. your lucky and it might not have snapped any rods or anytthing was there a loud bang?

no loud bangs, it just revved like a formula 1 and just strangled to cutoff. I've tried to crank it a few times. Tonight it fully turned over and stayed on, but it idled and smelled like a Nextel car (ya know, really rough idle and reeks of gasoline in the exhaust). No clinking or pinging noises. I'm just excited it (sorta) runs.
BTW, think we can move this back to the E36 forum? After all, its a 96 328i with an M52. The avatar is just my first love.

Because your ride isn't listed in profile and there's an E30 in your avatar

Thats pretty logical
Sorry to hear about what happened, I hope everything is well soon and won't hurt your wallet too much...at least you got it (sorta) running tho right? :wink

Yup - stopped by my trusty mechanic today. I haven't gotten the car towed over there yet, but he said he has done the same thing himself. He theorizes that I've mostly like bent all 12 exhaust valves. He quoted me over $2200. And I know he's not stiffin' me.

not sure yet - i haven't got the car into the shop yet - so thats a theoretical quote. I wish i new how to do the work myself. I have that thick-ass bentley manual...
So now that I have in there, I've learned that my crankshaft sensor has gone bad. I might get out of this thing for only about $200 (which would be great). Other things that are wrong with my car:
1. Potentially bent exhaust valves (unsure still)
2. Weak parking brake
3. Catalysts about to go
4. Replace water pump and thermostat housing (because I want to)
5. Flux Capacitor / Mr. Fusion assembly
heh, #5.Your a funny dude and are taking this rather lightheartedly.
Overrevving is serious business. If the needle really did go all the way back to zero (or at least sound like it was spinning 11,000 RPM) I'd be worried about the crankshaft being bent from that kind of abuse, but then again.
I have no useful info to contibute, I'm just blabbing. That sucks man.
