ghead I just bought a 1998 323i Sedan. The dealer only gave me one transmitter and two keys. One key works jus fine. The other key will only work AFTER I start the car with the first key, turn off the car, and insert the 2nd key.
If I just go up to the car and try to turn on the car with the second key only the lights and such turn on, but the car doesn't turn over....

Are you referring to the key fob which looks as if it has a corner chopped off, a red button and a grey button and the key that works has a little yellow light when u press the BMW logo on it? Thats the key which has the immobiliser stuff in it. You're second key can (possibly) only work when you enter the alarm code in your on board computer. The code should have been given to you in your book. Its in an envelope written on a credit card type of thing.
I think only the master key has the immobiliser stuff in it.
Wow, thanks for replying. I am referring to the all black key, with raised BMW symbol in the middle (no colors) The key is about the same size as the flashlight key.
ok cool... ive just dug out the manual to my car cos i couldnt remember much myself.
the book doesnt really specify which key has the immobiliser electronics within them but seems to generally imply that all the keys would have this.
It does say that the electronics in the key could be damaged by rough treatment which could prevent u from starting the engine. Its on Page 30 if u have the manual.
It does say that spare keys are available from BMW Service but they will require proof that u are the owner/keeper for the vehicle.
