OBD II VS OBD I

Ok I have a 328i and i have figured out that its an OBD II. But i have no idea what that means. So could anyone help me out. What are the diffrences between the OBD II and OBD I. What kind of a diffrence does it make on the performance of the car if you convert it and how much does it cost. If any one can help me out it would be great.

ODBII harder to mod and more restricted as far as emissions go

ODBI Easier to mod (Chips) and less restrictive allowing for more power to be gained from things like CAI, Chips, etc...

other stuff too but if you look around you can find lots of good info.
