has anyone ever used/bought/made an interface like this one?

if so, was it hard to make? where did you get the software from? what ports of the serial correspond with the diagnostic port of the bimmer? i wanted to make one since i got plenty of wires sitting around. just thought it would help me work on my cars....any ideas?

you mean something like this? (your link is dead dude...)

No. A diagnostic system will be very hard to make. You need lots of chips and timer and system clocks etc bla bla. If you are OBDII, you need a reader to do it yourself. 100$ isn't bad considering the electronics involved. A reset tool (for oil and service lights) is silly since you short out 2 pins for a certain length of time using a paperclip and it's done.

OBD I E36 BMW's have a nice trick called the gas pedal dance...
