OBD cable question

Hi guys,

can some one please explain the difference between the general OBD cable used for diagnostic and vgacom (or BMW special cable) ?
here is summery of my problem and why i am asking this question,

I have a genden ELM (genden.co.uk) and one of the e36 20 to 16 pin convertor but i can not connect to the ecu after trying numourous setting changes and ...
Basically my interface recognised the battery voltage and that is it.

However the same tool without the 20 pin convertor works on e46 without a problem which has the new 16 pin
any ideas as to why?

to answer my own question, genden elm has a different chip. in order to communicate with bmw a special bmw cable should be bought . this cable should be able to communicate with all moduels apart from abs-tsc and kombi.

in order to communicate with above modules a ads interface and ads 16 to 20 ping adaptor is needed

Disagree !
OBD I & OBD II may have different combinations of pcb chip but the results are the same !!!
Just the adaptor... That is ALL
