Noob looking for insight about push button start install

Hello, I am new here and have a question about my install. First of all, my car is a 96 328is E36. My lock cylinder did the infamous 'spin of death' on me for awhile and finally seized all together, and is stuck on 'run' mode. I decided to do the push button start modification because I dont have the hundreds of $$$ to spend on it at this time.

Anyhow, here is my dilemma. The car is EWS equipped, however it is still starting without a key in the ignition or anywhere near the EWS ring. What is causing it to be able to do this?

I appreciate any insight on this issue, and thanks for having me here.

Had the same problem myself mate. Its probably not your barrel thats fucked and more likely to be that your key has got so worn down that it slipped out of the barrel with the car in on the ON position.

Simple enough to fix though.... firstly get yourself a new key. You could go to BMW and swap a arm and a leg for one or just pop down to your local locksmwith and get him to cut you one. Make sure the head of the new key has a space for the immobilser chip. (You can pop it out of the old key and into the new one).

To unjam the barrel, unscrew the ignition switch (its the orange round part with wires coming out of it on the opposite side of the barrel to where the key go's in) There's two screws holding it in.... they mite be covered in a bit of plastic, just pop the plastic off.

Once ya got the ignition switch off ya'll be able to see the turner on the barrel (a small metal bit that sticks out and turns the switch) Get a plyers and turn it. This'll unjam it, leave it in the off position.

Then put everythin back together and use your new key. Should work a charm. To this day if i put my old key in the whole thing will lock up but they new key works perfectly.

Warbaby - had the same problem but worse. Daughter borrowed car and key locked in the off position but the car was still running. Before I could get home to pull the fuel pump fuse to kill the car, the car had overheated blowing the radiator tank gasket. Don't want to spend the money on the ignition if I now have a damaged engine.

Anyway, the key wont turn at all to get in the acc position to remove the cylinder lock. Read a thread where someone had used a screwdriver to force into this position, and then remove the cylinder lock. Well, it's free spinning now and I can't get out.

Would like to look into installing a pushbutton start, but am concerned about the steering locking up or not being able to shift the transmission since the cylinder lock is obviously fubar'd. Should this be a concern and / or any suggestions???
