Noisy Alternator?

Have been trying to track down a grating noise from the engine. Replaced the upper pulley (solved the howling wind noise) the lower pulley (hydralic) and checked the AC compressor (OK). Maybe a bad bearing in the alternator? Any suggestions? I already thought of earplugs.

Yea.. see if you can get a long wrench of sort.. something long and metal... then wrap one end with your hand... and put the other end... near... or on the pulley shaft.. and search around for the sound... you should hear a loud grinding noise if that is what you are looking for ..

You mean use it as a stethoscope to verify its generating the noise? Good suggestion, I wanted to rule out all other possibilities before replacing the alternator since they usually last longer than this and aren't cheap. Tks for the tip.
