Noise from the front... rrrr... nnnhhh

Hi EveryOne,

I have a 1999 323i.

It makes a noise when I step on the Gas at low speeds (10 - 20 Miles/Hr).

Like metal vibrating or Grinding or hitting against something real fast repeatedly.

It could also be there in high speeds, but I can't say because of the other noises.

It seems like its coming from the Right Front side of the car. May be near the wheel. Can't say really, coz the car is moving and I could be hearing it at a different place.

Its not from the A/C as it comes when the AC is off too.

I tried to get it on Audio Tape, but no luck ( Stuck a Recorder with Duct Tape and Drove around). There was audiable sound, but the tape did not get it.

It sounds like.

Its driving me nuts. ghead

i kinda had the same problem too and now i have to replace the plastic flap...forgot the technical name..the one that sides near the wheel. maybe its called mudguard ? Try checking that out..

If it's a metallic rattle at low rpms it sounds like an exaust hanger is lose. When my car his like 1700 rpms my back deck rattles it's kinda creepy cause it's right then. It's because the exaust has the right amount of back pressure to make it vibrate. I say check the rubber mount that's on the muffler, they're notorious for failing.

I did run up against a curb some time ago.
I'll check the mud flap thing out and also look at the exhaust hanger.

The Noise is quite loud. like ggnnnnnnnnnhhhhhhhhhhh.

I hope its not something critical in the engine.

I'll ask the mechanic to tighten any and every nut and bolt.

On searching the board I came across a posting that said it could be the parking break.

Any thoughts on that?

All right.. I know now what it sounds like.

Its like a plane, the single engine prop plane, like a cessna.
Only the pitch is a higher.
The same drone, but higher pitch.
Its some times lasts half a second. and mostly when I'm starting from a stop. The spedometer shows like 5 to 10 miles/hr and the RPM is at 5 to 10 (1000/min).

It stops adruptly.

hmmm does it sound like, geeeeeeeeeeeeeeshhhh? or does it sound like, SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeechhhh? maybe, kazoongggggggggggaaaaa?
