when idling and driving there is a chering sound from the engine that was not there when i forst brought the car. with the windows up u can harldy notice it but from the outside u can hear it quite clearly any 1 have any ideas what it might b ?
AC Compressor? Try turning the AC off and on, see if it stopps\resumes. Mine use to squeel like metal griding... like the bearings were shot or locked. Probably the reason why my AC dosn't work anymore.
this seems to be a common problem for e36's. It's the clattering noise I can't describe. I have that same sound too. Have no idea what it is. My friends bmw does it to. used
I also get a sharp squeel when the car is in drive or reverse. You can still hear it when you are in park, but it's not nearly as loud. It also goes away when I give the car a bit of gas - but then the squeel is replaced by the occasional churping you described.
I beleive it's the drive pulley, but I'm not positive. All I know is they are both REALLY terrible noises that I can't wait to get rid of.

I had the same problem in my old car. It was one of the pulleys just before the alternator. Usually you can just replace the pulley or lube it up and it will go away.
