hey. i have a '94 325is & every now and then i go to crank it and it will try to turn over but is unable to...i let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes and it will crank on the first try...i have no clue on what the problem could be, if someone could help
This sounds like its the common starter problem. Sometimes it goes away on its own, sometimes it gets worse. Mine used to do but now it doesn't Other people have had theirs do and just do it more and more. If you have the money, go ahead and replace the starter. If not, give it a few months and see how it goes.
When you try to start it, does it hum or make a noise like its trying to start but can't.

does this occur when the car is really hot, or the outside temp is really high or after the car has run for a while in the warmer months and then sit for up to about a 20 minutes? if you can answer yes to these questions it is something called heat soak which means your starter is so damn hot AND the windings or other internal components are in less than perfect shape, and this with the combined heat raises the resistance in the windings to the ppint where their is not enough current to turn that puppy over. All of this assumes healthy battery though. The heat soak occurs even on a perfectly good starter, but if your battery is in good condition there is still enough current to turn the starter...
So.... go check your battery for voltage under load and with no load before starting to suspect starter.
it doesn't make any hum...when its unable to crank it will sit there and try to turn over as long as you hold it....but still as long as i let it sit for a good 15 minutes, it will crank up on the first try , runs fine and makes no funny noises
its not raining when it happens...i got my battery checked out and they said theres a good charge...im thinking its the starter. i dont know...whenever i get the spare cash i'll get it check out and let you all know..i appreciate the help
