I just rigged up an intake like the ones on ebay ,just a short 3 inch pipe and a cone filter and you cant even here the intake. My last couple cars had a little to a lot of growl when i put an intake on. Didnt notice much of differance either
get a true cold air (the one that goes all the way down to the brake duct) and a K&N filter. If you're seriously worry about water getting into it, the cone would have to be pratically sumerged in water first and lets be honest, how many BMW owners have ever submerge thier car in more than a 9inches to a foot of water? You also might want to try opening your window. Sorry if I come off as a dick.
My intake does not really make much noise at the low end of RPMS, under 3000 I would say. I have a K&N I bought off of eBay, and I love it. THere really is no growl in 1st gear, but in second as you are accelerating, it sounds bootiful! :P It really only kicks in when im accelerating at a rather quick rate. My friend started calling it a "stealth intake" cause its only there when I want it to be. SO if I have somebody in the car (adult, parent, etc...) who might not appreciate a deep, throaty growl, I just ease off on the gas and take it a little gentler.
I do admit, it would be nice having a nice exhaust or CAI and always sound perfect, but thats for another day...
I was playing around with my stock airbox one day and I removed it. Then I cranked on the car and revved it a couple times to see what kind of sound it made. It was still "quiet" until about 4500 rpms, then I heard the growl of an open intake. The factory airbox and of course all the rubber tubing used with the will quiet it down. The 318 intake tube is basically rippled making a lot of turbulence. That may also slow air down, impeding sound and performance. Custom intake here I come
