ok basically the only time i have heat is when driving on the highway with my foot on the gas. then the heat provides a luke-warm wind... hahaha I know i need to get a new blower resistor pack because the unit only works on full blast. But that has no effect on the actual temperature of the heat itself. any suggestions on what i should do/ replace. i have a 93 318is. thanks
Replace the water pump?
Admittedly they are prone to breaking as their only plastic, i've had mine replaced not too long ago. But if this is gone you'll know because your car will over heat. Maybe not when driving, but as soon as you stop your temp guage will shoot up.
And before replacing the pump i'd replace the thermostat first, easier and cheaper. But again, once the car was running and not moving the temp will go up. There are various problems which can cause this, I don't know them all, i'd go for the heating matrix first as you have heat when on full.
If your thermostat is showing that the engine is heating up, then water pump is not the problem in this case. Most likely, it is the heater control valve which is not opening and allowing the hot water/coolant to enter the heater core inside your car.

No squeaks or rattles... unreal!
But if the water pumps gone and the thermostat hasn't then the temp guage will still go up, and aslong as you keep moving to get the air through the vents the air will keep the engine cool.
If the pump has gone, when the thermostat opens there will be no water getting around because the pump isn't pumping it. This is why you dont get heat because the matrix is on of the last things the water goes through.
the engine temp is fine and it warms up fine. Just no heat comes out freezing cold. I dont know what i should do cause i was told to replace a few things but no one really knows which will work.
also where is the heater control valve and how do i know if thats what is causing this?

i should be receiving my thermostat and O2 pump soon.
I have the same problem, except the temp never gets out of the blue range. The needle is right outside of the blue
Im changing it this weekend hopefully, and if it fixes the problem, ill get back to you
ive just recently noticed that problem as well, after having a period of warm weather, we had a sudden cold front in nc and the heat only blew hot when i was accelerating. i hope it has nothing to do with the heater core because i just had that replaced which was very expensive (about a grand) because it involved opening the dash and other things. but my temperature gague stays right in the middle, i'm thinking im having some oxygen sensor problems which was setting of my check engine light according to my mechanic at the last service. perhaps my problem is the oxygen sensor or the thermostat. Im beginning to realize that all bmw's generally have the same problems- which is good to know since you can rely on other e36 drivers for help
