Hi,
What will cause a 1992 325i to be in "LIMP MODE" "LIMP HOME MODE"
Thats when the tranny is stuck in 1:1 mode driving in 3rd or 4th gear and will not shift.
When i first start the car, put tranny in "D" it moves freely, then apply the brake and put tranny in "P", then in "D" the car will not move on its own.
It happened 10days ago while driving, i have no CLE or tranny warning light (bulds working properly)will read the codes tomorrow, (mechanic is out of town)
New battery 20days ago, new alternator, check DME no water damage, can't pull out the TCM (did not check) clean MAF, Trottlebody, air cleaner, new oil,
. When the old battery as going the car would intermittently go into limp mode, to remedy this i would disconnect the battery wait 15min all would be OK.
I searched most of the forums and can't find a clear answer. Hopefully someone can help.
FYI: The car is a 1992 325i, japan import with JATCO Tranny (not ZF or GM)
does your car have abs or traction control? ive seen traction control sensors go go bad and keep a car from shifting as it is trying to keep traction on what it thinks is a spinning tire...

for abs, find a wet parking lot, get up to speed, only needs to be like 20ish and slam on the brakes... if your pedal reacts back and feels wierd when you lock up then you have abs,
for traction control... can you take a pic of your engine bay? perticularly the intake side? theres certin things that are there if you have it, with out having you go out and try to do burnouts to find out heh
