I'm british but currently reside in Sacramento and just privatly purchased a dope looking 95' 325is, 115,xxx on the clock, Automatic transmisson.
I am used to driving manual shift and this is the first car i've driven with auto transmisson. I have been driving it for a few days now but have noticed a problem...
When shifting gently from N,R or P into D, and accelerate the car changes gears too early and JOLTS when its shifting up the gears (the kind of jolt you would get if you were driving manual and taking your foot off of the clutch too quickly.
When decelerating, the bimzimmer does the same and the revs get very low as it stands idle in what I would presume to be 2nd gear (so low that any manual car I've driven would stall)
NOTE: this problem does not occure if i change for N,R or P into D with a fast harder movement of the hand.
I thought this was casued by transmisson fluid so i've ordered a new filter kit etc... but the more i think about it the more it leads me to believe its some kind of electrical connection in the shifter maybe.
Does anyone else have any experience with this kind of problem and if so I would love and very much appreciate your input because this is driving me "nuts" (no preverbial pun intended)

I was just reading through a million other threads which relate to a similar problem and came across one that had this info:
---
Hard jolt on upshift or downshift
- Faulty clutches within tranny.
- Valve body faulty.
- Tranny electronics faulty.
---
This is the only thing i can discribe it as, but whats strange is that it never happens when you change into Drive "hard" or pull back on the stick to make sure its as far back in the Drive position as possible. this is something I could ignore and let slide for the moment under the knowledge that it wont happen if i change "hard" but my worry is that it will get worst and of course I would like to prevent that from happening.
I have not checked the levels of the trans fluid yet, my filter etc.. comes on monday and I have not pulled up the leather cover surrounding the shifter as i wouldnt know what i would be looking for, although I do have a high technical knowledge in electronics.
Once again if anyone knows anymore details about things I can check, people that could maybe look at it in the area.
I really sounds like low fluid levels. Could be a bunch of things, though. And it could be something electrical. Not helping much, I know. When you get it up in the air to change the fluid, do a thorough visual check for leaks. There is a DIY on www.pelicanparts.com on how to change the fluid and filter. Maybe when you pull back softly, it's not engaging fully due to wear. These are all guesses, eventually you are probably going to have to take it to a transmission specialist, though I hope not.

Thank you for taking the time to read my thread and to reply, There are many other threads on SIMILAR cases of problems around 120,xxx with auto transmissions but not an exact same case as mine.
AND NOW MY SAY... it looks as though people (like myself) just sign up to this forum to get an answer to a fix, it appears that when they get replies, they fix their car and don't bother signing back in to comfirm whether the fix was successfull or not. There are a lod of dead threads which never got resolved and it infuriates me almost to the same extent as bittorent users that cancel seeding after a file is complete.
So I will say this now, that I will keep you all posted on the continuing problems and fixes that I come across in the future as this comunity would be nothing withought people that actually see things through...
I will also post a how to on installing an In-line stealth charger for my sidekick cellphone.

Does your tranny have a snow condition selector?I I`am having smilar problem
I use the snow seletor and my problem went away.
I have a 98 328i with auto tranny and experience some similar symptoms. I have about 110k on her right now and plan on changing the fluid in a few weeks just to be safe. What happens with mine is i get a loud thud that can be felt when shifting out of park and into drive or reverse. Sometimes when cold the tranny has hard shifts up or down, but it usually subsides after 30 mins of driving or so. Also the tranny sometimes hangs in one gear for a bit longer than it seems it should for an auto. Upon hard accelleration it sometimes feels like its slipping going from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th...I can only describe it as slipping like a standard shift might do with a worn clutch at high rpms. Let me know how things go after the auto tranny fluid change.

Hi cars back from the dealer they checked the fluid then took down the trany for check all parts and sstill there was still a little jerkyness there. they said in the end that it was the control box i had to change but if i didnt mind the shifting it was okey not to change it. well with the control thing at 90k in philippine pesos roughly 1700US$ i think i might just keep it as is for now
