New On The Forum, With A Gearbox Problem

Hello all,

I place this message on the E36 forum, because the gearbox I have a question about is the Getrag S5D 250, which is mainly used in the 320i, 323i and 325i E36

My girlfriend just bought a e39 520i (november 1996). The car has only done 110.000 registered kms (65000 mls) and looks, smells and drives like a new one, except for on thing: When I drove it through the city, the manual gearbox jumped out of first gear on 3 ocasions (when I wanted to drive away from the green light). After this experence, I tried to cause it again on a parking-lot but I couldn't. Also my girlfriend never has this problem, until now. The clutch and transmission operate precise and smooth.

Does somebody if we have a problem and how it can be fixed?

Could be your synchros. Don't really know about how hard that would be to fix, etc., but you can start doing some research to see if the symptoms of worn synchros match what you see in the 520. Good luck.

I guess you have to remove the gearbox for replace some parts. Probably one of the synchros will be bad!
