Hi Everyone,
I just traded my car for a 1998 328i. Unfortunately I did not get any manuals with the car, so I have a few questions that I was hoping you could answer for me.
1. what are the little buttons [1000] [100] [10] [1] on the computer control panel for?
2. EDIT-ANSWERED VIA FAQ
3. Is there a Rev. Limiter on this model to prevent over-reving the engine?
4. What does the [CHECK] button check for?
5. What is the [MEMO] button for and how does it work?
6. Where the heck is the battery?
Lastly, is there any maintenance issues I should be on the lookout for? My car has 67,000 miles on it and seems to have been serviced regularly (according to carfax).
Thanks in advance. Love the car so far.

I can attempt to field a few of those questions...
1. The little buttons are for setting values within the onboard computer.
Each button changes a number within its integer - ones, tens, hundreds, thousands - for setting such things as limit, distance, etc.
2.
3. I honestly do not know.
4. The Check button is for BMW Check Control - it's a system that'll tell you if certain things are amiss with the car, and the messages will appear on the onboard computer screen. Check control alerts you to things like burn-out headlight/taillight bulbs, low coolant, and other things that you should be able to take care of on your own. Usually if no message comes up when you start the control there's nothing wrong and it'll read "Check Control OK."
5. The memo button is for just that - recording memos. Unfortunately I never used it so I don't know exactly how to record them.
6. Your battery is on the right side of the luggage compartment.
Hope all that helped, sorry I couldn't field all of the questions for you.

Welcome to the Forums, the rev limiter is set to 6500rpm, have fun with your new car, glad that you read the HALO books. (mjolnir is the armor that the master chief uses)

I was in the same boat as you. New to performance cars, especially beemers, no manuals. Go here for the service manual....and pretty much everything else http://www.bavauto.com/
and sign onto some more BMW forums. I currently subscribe to these and I've learned tons:

The redline is at 6750rpm, it does not prevent over revving. If you shift from 5th to 2nd at 100mph, you will over rev. There is nothing to prevent that mistake.
The memo feature doesn't allow you to record memo's (where did you get that from?!?). When you press the button, a little speaker icon appears in the clock display. At 15 seconds before the hour, the On Board Computer will beep 3 times. The point of this is to get the news on the radio before it starts, smart eh?
