need help

I have a 1995 318i the problem i have is it wont start i have replaced the ecu computer but the car trys to start but it backfires and thats it. I checked the plugs and they smell like gas and so does my oil. the car ran fine till it we had a down pour and now it wont start at all. i had it towed to a mechanic and he said it was a bad ecu and i replaced it but still nothing any ideas what the problem maybe

Seems a lot like an ignition issue.

The ecu's are coded to your specific model & year, so the serial # on the replacement ecu has to be exact to the one that was in the car......or you will get this condition.

and check if you have the red tab or white tab ECU
