does the e36 use a wideband or narrow band oxygen sensor

Narrow... either its a yes sent to the ECU or a no... but in numerical form by way of electric current drawn. Thats for the aft cat sensors... as they only deal with good or bad cats... now the front two... on obd 2 cars... I'd have to check on the band width... cause they directly deal with A/F ratios.

I believe the front cats are wide band. The output voltage varies over a set range with pretty decent resolution.

I have OBD1 so does this apply to me or what do i have since i got a 95 325i

All BMW's are narrow band, in fact most all street vehicles are narrow band. They have been made from a couple of different materials over the years but they are still narrow band sensors ( operates between 0.0-1.0 volt with optimal being approx. .45v ) Wide band Air/Fuel sensors are generally found in race/off road applications where fuel mixtures are desired away from the EPA optimal 14.7:1 ratio.
