mysterious noise coming from engine - BMW Forum

I noticed while idling yesterday there was a "light thunk" coming from the engine. It's there whether I'm driving or idling. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side.
There is no engine light on, and I'm wondering about maybe a bad belt? I don't have a timing belt, but rather a timing chain (it's a 97 318).

Kinda vague, based on the info, could be quite a few things. Ticking? Check your oil level. Thumping? Coulc be a belt. Neither would cause a warning light. If you can provide more info, maybe we can help.

this is the time of the year when the heater valve will start to work and that makes a light clicking noise...put your hand on it you will feel it working when the car is running. the valve is below and to the right of the brake booster and has three round valves in a row.
