Which is the most economical?

Hello,

Firstly, I am from the UK. As you may already know, fuel prices are extremely expensive here. £1.05 a litre which is about $2.00USD a litre. I currently drive an E36 BMW 316. (1600cc) I don't find the car to be very economical and I seem to be making very regular trips to the fuel station! Now my question is, is the BMW 316 the most fuel efficient petrol E36? Some people say that the BMW's with larger engines would be more fuel efficient due to the fact that they wouldn't have to work as hard. However, when I look at MPG figures on various websites, they do not seem to support that theory at all.

Also, a separate question, are the diesel E36's any good? I.e. are they reliable and quiet? Or are they just old, dirty and noisy diesels? I am looking for a replacement car and hope to have something more fuel efficient. It would be nice to have a BMW 330is and many of you guys probably think I'm strange for aiming for something slower, but fuel prices are just stupid here, and they're only going to get a lot worse when the government put taxes up on fuel by over 4p by next year, coupled with the anticipated price increase of oil!

Thanks.

- Rich

dvmotorsports is on a distinguished road
i hear the 118d wagon is a great car and the highway fuel economy is estimated at 60.1 miles per gallon. Not quite sure what that is in litres per kilometer, but it's alot.

I drove a 318i and found it to be economical by American standards. Since I am American I don't speak metric or any other foreign language (any one else see that commerical?) but I would get almost 300 miles on 1/2 a tank of gas (7.9 gallons) on the highway (at 70+mph) and could keep above 22 mpg in the city when I tried to. It was a manual if that helps you figure out if it is more economical.

One question, what kind of mileage are you seeing on your 316? That SHOULD be a rather economical engine!
