I have a 318 and i always use premium gas (93 Octane) and the other day I see a 318 for sale and i call to see (out of curiosity.. im sure u guys do the same at times) .. and he starts telling me he gets 400 miles to the tank ( and im thinking damn this guy is lying off his ass) and just today i saw a post on the forums that someone gets 400 plus.. and i get to thinking... i only get 270-300 ... is there a possibilty that i have a leak or do earlier years have smaller tanks?
Thank you
derek

Hey bro, I am not sure if earlier models have smaller tanks but I usually fill up with 15.5 gallons and I get anywere from 300 miles to 340 miles depending if I use AC and if I push it or not. Most of the times I only go to 300 miles. That brings me to the red in the empty.
my 65 litre or 16-17 US gallon tank gets me 310 miles or 500 km but I do not drive conservatively and fill 91 octane. I also drive a 325. My 318 usually got me 650 km or roughly 400 miles if I drove like a sane man...

I have a 95' 318is (automatic) and I always end up getting about 250-270 miles per tank. My uncle says that his 95' 318i (manual) always gets over 300 miles per tank. Manual cars always get better gas mileage is what I hear. Is yours auto or manual.
It just depends if you do mainly highway or street driving. I usually get around 290 a tank in my 325is since I rarely go on the highway, but when I do I have gotten in the high 300's.
im worried for you guys... I get about 400 miles to the tank highway... about 350ish around town... and i have a heavy foot. (doing 80 in the hwy)...
...and i have a 328i. i do have a CAI tho.
go to his post started by saltshaker to see this.

Im actually pretty impressed...
I've got a 92 318is all stock that takes somewhere around the neighborhood of 17 gallons on a full tank, and I'm getting about 300 to the tank when i drive it hard and 400+ when i drive very conservatively.

Any of the following could affect your fuel efficiency negatively:
- dirty fuel filter
- spark plugs in need of replacement
- ignition coils in need of replacement
- inadequate pressure in tires
- blown suspension components
- oxygen sensors need replacement (sometimes this happens even in the absence of a 'check engine' light)
These are all I can think about right now. There may be other possible causes.
- dirty air filter
- Alighment needed
- Always using the a/c or windows down.
- Driving with multiple people or always having cargo in the car.
idk why the 6 cyls are doing better than some of the 4s... u may want to replace/change what drz and I have listed. chaosbunny- in a 318, u need to be breaking 300 every tank...
make sure its not your gauge too... to test it, just fill the car up completely, drive atleast 100 miles (would be best to try and use the whole tank), then fill the car up all the way again and compare the amount of miles driven, to the amount of gas you just put in.
