I was driving in my friend's 98 328is and at random times during the ride a message came up under the radio/climate controls, etc. that was something like "Outside +2.5 C" and the C would blink and the thing would beep. Naturally I assumed the car was just trying to be helpful by telling me what temperature it was outside but why would it beep and why would it do it randomly/sporadically?

When the outside temperature reaches 3 C and lower, the system warns the driver of possible icy conditions by giving a single audible chime and the letter "C" flashes for 8 seconds.

This usually occurs after about 5 minutes after starting the engine, and only comes on sporatically to remind the driver of this possible dangerous road condition.
