Main Key

I have a 1998 318i, the main key has a BMW emblem on it and a light however it will not start the car, it turns as it should in the ignition but nothing else. The spare works fine, does it need to be reprogrammed, is it possible to do it myself, I've seen other cars where the key can be programmed without having to go to a dealer, any suggestions much appreciated.........

you can try the dealer but if you search you should be able to find the info on how to iniliaze the key.
